The cheapest thing that works is not a cheap feeder. It is an ordinary feeder in the right place.

“Cheap squirrel proof bird feeders” is a real search and the results are mostly bad, because the cheap feeders in this category are the ones where the mechanism has been value-engineered out of it. The way to spend less is not a worse feeder. It is to spend the money on the part that does the work.
Where each dollar goes furthest
- Nothing at all: move the feeder. Free. If it currently hangs within seven feet of a fence, wall or branch, moving it is the single biggest improvement available and it costs an afternoon. The distances are here.
- A steel baffle. The cheapest hardware that reliably changes the outcome, and it works with every feeder you ever own.
- A bag of safflower. Cheaper than a baffle. Works often enough to be worth trying, and does not work always — the honest version is here.
- The smallest real mechanism. If a pole is impossible, the Squirrel Buster Mini is the least expensive route into a weight-closing shroud.
The setup we would actually buy on a tight budget
A plain 1 to 2 lb tube feeder with metal ports, a steel torpedo baffle, and a solid pole sited in the open. Fill it with black oil sunflower. That combination will outperform a mid-priced “squirrel-proof” feeder hung off a branch, and the baffle survives every feeder you replace over the next decade.
What you give up
Capacity, mostly. A one or two pound tube at a busy autumn station needs refilling every couple of days, and in deep winter that is a real chore. The expensive feeders buy you time as much as they buy you squirrel resistance. If you know you will not refill often, size up rather than economizing — the larger options are here.
False economies
- All-plastic anything. Squirrels chew. Metal ports and a metal hanger are the difference between a feeder that lasts and a feeder that gets opened.
- Undersized baffles. Published guidance asks for at least eighteen inches on a hanging dome. A twelve-inch dome is money spent for nothing.

What is the cheapest way to stop squirrels?
Move the feeder so it is at least seven to ten feet from anything a squirrel can jump off. That costs nothing and does more than most purchases.
Are cheap squirrel-proof feeders worth buying?
Usually not. What gets cut to hit a price is the mechanism and the metal. A plain feeder plus a steel baffle is a better use of the same money.
Can I make a squirrel baffle myself?
People do, from stovepipe or a salad bowl. The geometry is what matters: enough length or diameter, mounted with its top at least four and a half feet up. A homemade baffle that meets those numbers works; one that does not, does not.
