A pole system with an integrated baffle is the most effective single purchase in backyard bird feeding. Nearly every beginner spends their entire budget on the feeder and then hangs it from a tree branch, which is the one location a squirrel is guaranteed to reach. A pole is the correction, and it is the highest-leverage purchase in this hobby: it works on every feeder you will ever own, it does not wear out, and it does not depend on a mechanism being tuned correctly.

Why arm reach matters more than it sounds
A squirrel that climbs the pole above the baffle — or gets onto the pole from above — can reach whatever is close to it. Nineteen inches of arm clearance, as the Sequoia publishes, puts the feeder outside easy reach from the pole itself. Short decorative hooks put the feeder six inches from the metal, which defeats the purpose.
The honest note on published heights
Sellers publish two different heights for the Squirrel Stopper Sequoia: 8 ft 2 in in one listing and 7 ft 6 in in another. We have not measured one, so we are telling you both rather than picking the flattering figure. It matters because the 5-7-9 rule asks for nine feet of clearance below an overhanging branch — and neither published height gets you there under a low branch. Site accordingly: in the open, not under the maple.
Installing it so it actually works
- Pick the spot first. Seven to ten feet of clear space in every direction — fences, walls, sheds, chairs, low branches. This is the whole job.
- Get it vertical and firm. A leaning pole gives a squirrel an angle to work with, and a wobbling one drops feeders.
- Mount the baffle at four and a half feet or higher. Measure it. Do not eyeball it.
- Then hang the feeders, keeping them away from the pole and away from each other so hulls from one do not rain into another.
What if you cannot use a pole?
On a deck, a balcony or paved ground, you are down to feeder mechanisms and placement against the building. That is a genuinely harder problem and it is covered in balcony and small-space feeding.
