Squirrels: what works, what does not, and what nobody admits

Search for a squirrel-proof bird feeder and every result will tell you it has solved the problem. One major publisher's headline promises feeders squirrels “can't beat.” A manufacturer publishes thirty-day test results for its own products. The category sells certainty because certainty converts.

We are not going to do that, because it is not true, and because the honest version is more useful anyway.

The honest position

Weight-triggered and caged feeders are squirrel-resistant. They work, often very well, and they are worth the money. But a squirrel that can reach the top of the feeder, chew the hanger, or drop onto it from above still wins, and every manufacturer knows it. Placement does more than the feeder does

This is the part that gets buried under product recommendations. A squirrel reaches your feeder by one of three routes: climbing the pole, jumping across from something, or dropping from above. A baffle stops the first. Only distance stops the other two.

Duncraft's 5-7-9 rule puts numbers on it: five feet up from the ground, seven feet of clear space around the feeder, nine feet below any overhanging branch. Other retailers publish different figures — eight to ten feet of horizontal clearance, or ten to twelve — and a baffle top mounted four and a half to five feet up the pole.

Those sources disagree, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The practical reading: seven feet is the minimum anyone recommends, ten is what the more cautious sources say, and if your yard can give you ten, give it ten. What to actually buy, in order of effect

1. A pole and a baffle, if you have anywhere to put a pole. This is the highest-impact purchase in the whole category. See baffles and poles.

3. Safflower seed, as a cheap experiment before spending on hardware. Most squirrels dislike it. Some do not. See safflower and squirrels.

What does not work

Greased poles wash off in the first rain and can foul a bird's feathers. Slinkies on a pole are a genuine folk remedy with mixed results and a real tangling risk. Hot-pepper treatments are legal in most places and unpleasant to handle; birds cannot taste capsaicin and mammals can, but the dust gets into eyes — yours, mostly. Putting out a squirrel feeder as a decoy belongs on that list too, and it is the one people are most surprised by: reliable food raises how many squirrels the yard supports, so you recruit rather than divert. A note on the animal

Squirrels are not vandals. They are a food-caching rodent doing exactly what natural selection built them for, in a yard where somebody hung up a bucket of high-fat seed. Nothing here involves harming them, and we will not publish a method that does. The goal is a feeder they cannot reach, not a squirrel that suffers for trying.
