Seed & Sprig answers the questions somebody asks in the first week of feeding birds: which feeder, what seed, where do I hang it, and will squirrels ruin it. Those four questions have decent answers, and almost nobody writes them for a beginner — the ranking pages are written for a shopper who already knows what a hopper is.
Who this is for
Someone who has never owned a bird feeder. That is the whole editorial brief, and it decides everything else: plain words instead of jargon, the number in the first sentence instead of four paragraphs of preamble, and the unflattering part said out loud rather than left for you to discover in November.
If you already run four feeders and know your nyjer from your safflower, you are welcome here, but you are not who the site is written for.
What is on the site
45 guides, comparisons and roundups across five sections — feeder types, seed, squirrels, setup and placement, and seasonal care — plus a product registry of 25 items whose specifications are taken from the manufacturers' own published listings and cited on the page.
The first-feeder walkthrough is the place to start. If squirrels are already your problem, start with the honest answer about squirrel-proof feeders instead — it changes what you should buy.
Who writes it
Scooter M., an enthusiast who reads the manuals, compiles the published specifications and does the arithmetic. No ornithology degree, no wildlife-biology credential, no expert panel, no lab coat — and no pretending otherwise.
What we do not claim
We have not tested these products. There is no workshop, no year of backyard trials and no set of feeders on a rack out back. That is an unusual thing for a site like this to say, and it is the reason the methodology page exists: it sets out exactly what we did instead, in enough detail that you could repeat it.
We also have no founding story. This site launched in 2026. There is no decades-long family tradition behind it and we are not going to invent one.
